As part of Orientation Weekend, groups of over a hundred freshmen, Greeks, RAs, and Unit Buddies were divvied up and sent out to different parts of Flint to give back to the community. When they showed up in the Great Court, none of them knew where they would be going or what they would be doing.

Help in Haiti: An Update

Just a quick status update on our efforts to assist victims in Haiti following the earthquake disaster on January 12th, 2010. Here is where we stand so far:

• 2 dozen filters shipped to Haiti. Kettering's contribution consists of 15 HydrAid® BioSand filters, plastic bodies, lids and diffusers less the cost of sand and gravel (donated by Nugent Sand) less the cost of training & installation (donated by the "Pure Water for the World" organization) palletized together with enough sand and gravel for 15 installations.

KSG Finance Council Describes Budgeting Process

Where does your $122 student activity fee go? The KSG budget, printed elsewhere in this issue of The Technician, is the simplest answer. Still, the perennial questions are likely to arise. Just how much of the budget goes to food? (Usually about 20%) Who plans and executes big-ticket KSG events like late night breakfast and wings night? (The KSG Operations Council) What is "Flowers and Gifts" all about? (A constitution-specified fund for courtesy items in case of a student or staff member death) Who decides which club budget items are funded and which are not, and how do they decide? This latter question required an interview with the KSG Finance Council.

Layoffs

As most students probably already know, Kettering is facing some difficult times. Through¬out June, several staff members were laid off. The administration felt that it was necessary to reduce the amount of staff to help stay within budget. It was a difficult decision; the members laid off were sent off with the faculty's condolences at a university barbeque.
